The Friendship 20 Foundation and the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held their annual June event, "Recess: End of School Party”, which is a special opportunity to celebrate the talent, enthusiasm, and dedication that Dallas-Fort Worth and surrounding area educators and administrators bring to various school districts throughout the year. The work of these educators comes to life at this event with a new and exciting performance and theme every year. This event has continued to grow and move, but as of 2015, has found its current home at the Fort Worth Downtown Central Library. The event has a tradition of always being conducted on the first Friday of June, which is traditionally the last day of school for most. In 2017, the event was held from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., with the proceeds benefiting the Friendship 20 Scholarship Fund.
Bro. Antonio Little of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter, who decorated the event, along with his wife and the help of Bro. William Fergus, Bro. Donovan Wright, and Bro. Clarence Brooks, stated: “The efforts of education are a task of pleasure, not necessarily a reward. Being an educator and administrator myself, I know that education is a perilous business. It is a business where we expose our souls, making thousands of decisions every day, facing hundreds of different scenarios and dilemmas, inviting challenges, and taking on enormous responsibility. Therefore, anytime an event, like this Recess Party, can occur to recognize those daily challenges and the triumphs of positively making it through another day, month, or year for the students, community, and yourself, I am all for it.” Bro. Louis Simmons, Event Chairman for the event added: “My best feelings come from knowing that this event recognizes educators, administrators, and support staff that mirror the dedication, ingenuity, intelligence, and passion of their students and communities. This is just the tip of the iceberg, of how we hope to infuse ourselves within The DFW Metroplex community and to show an appreciation for these talented and special individuals. As the end of the school year approaches, many parents (and grandparents) wonder how they can thank their children's teachers for all their wonderful, inspirational, risky, hard work. May I suggest giving to the Friendship 20 Foundation in honor of a teacher? That gift will be multiplied by others and used to honor and celebrate all educators, administrators, and support staff, who serve in the DFW Metroplex community.”
